POINTS OF INFORMATION:

1. As of February 10, 2004, the treasury report showed total certificates of deposit of $62,049.52 and total savings and checking balances of $56,258.12.  The total fund balance for District 2 is currently $118,307.64.

2.  Congratulations to Pittston Area (Coach Matt Giampetro) and Lake-Lehman (Coach Phil Lipski) – the District 2 Wrestling Team Dual Champions!

2.  Informational items from the February PIAA Board of Directors meeting as presented by Frank Majikes at the last District 2 Board Meeting include:

·        The First Reading of the “Interrupted Contest” amendment to the By-Laws passed by a 29-1 vote (Frank was the lone negative at the direction of the District 2 Committee).

·        There is a proposed amendment to the By-Laws that will allow students who are participating in a sport due to a cooperative agreement between PIAA member schools to continue that participation until their eligibility is exhausted – even if the agreement is dissolved by participating schools.  This will be a First Reading item at the next Board of Directors meeting.

·        The Board of Directors has recommended to the National Federation for their consideration a proposal to move the distance of the mound in softball to 43 feet.

·        The Field Hockey Steering Committee has recommended to the Board of Directors for their consideration a proposal to change the overtime format in determining a winner when a Regular Season senior high school varsity field hockey contest and/or Regular Season senior high school varsity field hockey tournament contest end regulation play with the score tied.  The proposal calls for one 15-minute reduced player “sudden victory” overtime period, rather than one 10-minute and one 5-minute reduced player “sudden victory” overtime period.  Furthermore, they recommended that in post-season play the procedure provide for two 15-minute reduced player “sudden victory” overtime periods, rather than two 10-minute and two 5-minute reduced player “sudden victory” overtime periods, both effective July 1, 2004.  Stay tuned!

·        There will be no Girls Golf Team Championships.  This is a reversal from an earlier announcement from the state.  The number of girls’ teams across the state does not meet the criteria established in order to hold a Team Championship at the state level.

·        The Board of Directors will consider the District 2 request to adjust the winter schedule for 2004-2005 at their next meeting.

·        The proposal to increase the number of softball and baseball games from 20 to 24 was not passed by the Board of Directors – the number of contests will remain at 20.

·        There will be a first reading at the next Board of Directors meeting concerning a request from the Sports Medicine Committee.  They have requested that the Board of Directors approve the prohibition of pads and contact for the first three days of practice in the August PIAA practice period in order to protect the players from heat exhaustion concerns.

3.  At their February meeting, the District 2 Committee was introduced to the new District 2 local Counsel, Attorney Donald Rogers.  Welcome, Don!  Don assists the committee with legal advice on any local matters for which legal advice is required.

Yours in sports,

Mike Ognosky

District II Secretary
