JANUARY, 2004 DISTRICT 2 NEWSLETTER

ITEMS THAT NEED TO BE COMPLETED BY ATHLETIC DIRECTOR/PRINCIPALS:

1.  At the January District 2 meeting the committee voted to increase the number of medals awarded at the Junior High Sectional Wrestling District Championships from 4 to 6 per weight class.  This was in response made on behalf of junior high wrestling by the Athletic Director at Plains Solomon Junior High School, Francis Michael.

2.  The committee also approved an increase in medals in District Football from 40 to 50 per team for next year.  The District Champions and runners up in all classifications will receive 50 medals to be distributed by the schools as they wish.  As in past years, if a school needs more than the allotted 50 medals they must contact Tom Jenkins, Football Chairperson, and he will make the necessary arrangements to get the extra medals at the member schools cost.

3.  The committee also reviewed a request submitted by Stew Casterline, Athletic Director of Tunkhannock, on behalf of the Wyoming Valley Conference, asking that the first play date for winter sports for the 2004-2005 season be moved from Friday, December 3rd to Friday, November 26th in order to allow for the necessary number of play dates for the scheduling of league contests.  The committee directed Frank Majikes, District 2 Chairperson, to take that request to the next State Committee meeting.

4.  The committee also set the ticket prices for the District 2 football championships for the 2004 playoffs.  Adult tickets have been increased from $5 to $6, while student tickets will remain at $3.  The price reflects both the advance and gate prices.

5.  The following have either passed a first or second reading at the State Committee level – remember, on the third reading they become part of the official By-Laws.  Feel free to contact Frank Majikes with your reaction:

·        (Passed Second Reading) – Football games interrupted prior to the completion of the first half as a result of events beyond the control of the responsible administrative authority, may either continue from the point of interruption or terminate with the existing score.  If one complete half or more of a game has been played, the game shall terminate with the existing score, unless otherwise provided for by state association adoption.

·        (Passed Second Reading) – The Principal or Superintendent of a member school failing to file the requested enrollment report by the date in which the Public School Enrollment Report is due to PDE, shall be sent a notice of such failure and a copy of this provision.  If the enrollment is not received within ten (10) days after this notice was sent, the school shall be assessed a fine of $1,000.  For each ten days thereafter that the enrollment report is not received, the school shall be assessed an additional fine of $1,000 and the school will be ineligible for district or inter district play.

·        (Referred to Coaches’ Advisory Committee for their consideration and review) – Any coach or contestant ejected from a Contest by a state high school association recognized and/or registered sports’ official in that sport for unsportsmanlike conduct or flagrant misconduct shall be disqualified from coaching and/or participating for the remainder of the day and in the next Contest on the next Contest day at the same level of competition in the sport of football; and the next two consecutive Contests on the next two consecutive Contest days a the same level of competition in all other sports.

6.  New on the web site:

·        You will find the updated basketball standings on the web page on a daily basis.

·        The District Championship basketball format has been posted on the web page – it includes a complete explanation of the locations and sites selection procedure established by the District 2 Committee.

·        Please review your sports classifications for the 2004-05 and 2005-06 sports’ seasons and let Mike Ognosky, 278-6298, know if there are any inaccuracies. They are posted on the web page.

2.  The restructuring of the PIAA football brackets for the 2004-2005 year is in its final stages.  The State Committee has attempted to develop brackets in all classifications that reflect better balance in the number of schools that participate in the east and west.  It will result in the following adjustments if approved by the State Board this weekend:

·        In ‘A’, District 6 has been moved to the eastern side of the brackets.

·        In ‘AAA’, District 4 has been moved to the western side of the brackets.

·        In ‘AAAA’, District 3 has been moved to the western side of the brackets.
