MINUTES OF JANUARY 20, 2005 MEETING

@ WILKES-BARRE VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL SCHOOL

 

Meeting was convened at 4:15 p.m. by Chairman Majikes

 

ITEM 1           Chairman Majikes called the meeting to order at 4:15 p.m. 

 

                        Absent but accounted for: Mike Ognosky, Rose Crotti, Tom Finan, Bill King, Ray Lowery, Ross Scarantino, Don Rogers

                        Advisors Present:  Marty Lawler, Phil Latinski

 

ITEM 2           A motion was made by Bob Okrasinski, seconded by Frank Galicki, to approve the minutes of the December 15, 2004 meetings.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 3           Frank Victor presented the treasurer’s report and football financial report from the 2004 District II Playoffs.  A motion was made by Jim Sabatini, seconded by Dan Donovan, to approve the reports as presented.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 4           Frank Victor presented the Basketball Tournament format information.  The basketball seeding meeting has been set on Monday, February 14th at 4:00 p.m. at the Pittston Convention Center.  Each school is asked to limit their representation to the Principal and the Athletic Director.  A motion was made by Tom Jenkins, seconded by Frank Galicki, to approve the format as presented.  All Ayes 

 

ITEM 5           Chairman Majikes read a thank you from the family of Brad Cashman,

                        PIAA Executive Director, in appreciation for the District II Committee’s

                        contribution in memory of his father, who recently passed away.

 

ITEM 6           A motion was made by Tom Jenkins, seconded by Frank Galicki, to approve a request by Delaware Valley to play an 11th football game in the 2005 season.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 7           A motion was made by Frank Galicki, seconded by Dan Donovan, to approve the eligibility of Danielle Conway, from Crestwood to Bishop Haban, in accordance with Article VI, Section 8, Transfers and Residence, of the PIAA By-Laws.   All Ayes

 

                        A motion was made by Jim Higgins, seconded by Maureen Williams, to approve the eligibility of Kevin Kolodjie, from Pittston Area to Coughlin,  in accordance with Article VI, Section 8, Transfers and Residence, of the PIAA By-Laws.  All Ayes

 

                        A motion was made by Frank Galicki, seconded by Dan Donovan, to approve the eligibility of Jian Chi, from GAR to Bishop Hoban, in accordance with Article VI, Section 8, Transfers and Residence, of the PIAA By-Laws.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 8           Tom Jenkins updated the committee on the results of the appeal hearing held recently in the PIAA State Office regarding a West Side Vo-Tech student, Adam J. Wasielewski.  Tom reported that the District II Committee decision was reversed in the appeals hearing and Adam was granted an additional year of eligibility by the appeals’ board.    

 

ITEM 9           Chairman Majikes presented information on Ohio State Athletic Association’s establishment of penalties for players who go into the stands or fight with fans.  He also presented information on the on-going court cases as a result of the suspension of the North Catholic Girls’ Basketball Coach.

 

ITEM 10         Chairman Majikes that there are amendments proposed for the consideration of the Board of Directors on the following matters:

·         Attendance issues for charter schools, privately tutored students, home schooled students and cyber charter school students.

·         Attendance issues for students placed by court order as a result of a disability.

·         Health certifications and re-certifications for athletes – who can perform them?

                       

ITEM 11         Chairman Majikes presented information on a student who attends Nanticoke and whose parents have residences in the Nanticoke School District and another school district.  The student remains eligible at Nanticoke. 

 

ITEM 12         The committee heard correspondence from a Bishop Hafey parent to the PIAA Office complaining about the behavior of the Wyoming Seminary Girls’ Basketball Coach during and after the recent Bishop Hafey-Wyoming Seminary game.  PIAA referred the matter to District II Committee and heard subsequent correspondence from the parent to Wyoming Seminary administration, from the administration to the parent and from the Wyoming Seminary administration to the Bishop Hafey administration.  After reviewing all of the information, the committee felt that Wyoming Seminary has taken appropriate action in this case.  A motion was made by Don Kanavy, seconded by Frank Galicki, stating that the actions taken by the Wyoming Seminary administration addressed the situation in a satisfactory manner.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 13         A motion was made by Frank Galicki, seconded by Mike Costanza, authorizing Swim Chairman Jim Higgins to purchase software for the upcoming District II Diving Competitions, if needed.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 14         A motion was made by Jim Higgins, seconded by Jim Sabatini, to approve the wrestling format for the upcoming District Championships as submitted by Bill Hilburt.  The information will be forwarded to each member school.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 15         A motion was made by Tony Rusnak, seconded by Joe Lalli, to adjourn the meeting.  All Ayes

 

Meeting was adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
