MINUTES OF MAY 18, 2005 MEETING

@ WILKES-BARRE VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL SCHOOL

 

Meeting was convened at 4:15 p.m. by Chairman Majikes

 

ITEM 1           Chairman Majikes called the meeting to order at 4:15 p.m. 

 

                        Absent but accounted for:  Mike Ognosky, Frank Victor, Don Kanavy, Joe Lalli, Ray Lowery, Phil Cappellini, Rose Marie Crotti

 

                        Advisor Present: Phil Latinski, Delores Dalickas

 

ITEM 2           A motion was made by Maureen Williams, seconded by Dan Donovan, to approve the minutes of the April 20, 2005 meeting.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 3           There was no treasurer’s report for today’s meeting.

 

ITEM 4           Chairman Majikes reviewed the procedures of the recently conducted Annual Business Meeting and Awards Banquet and asked for any concerns that had been brought to the attention of the committee.  There were no concerns brought forward at this time.          

 

ITEM 5           Mr. Majikes presented a letter of resignation from committee member

                        Rose Marie Crotti dated May 12, 2005 citing a change in job requirements

                        that limit her ability to attend after school meetings.  A motion was made

                        by Jim Sabatini, seconded by Bob Okrasinski to accept, with regret, the

                        resignation of Rose Marie Crotti as a District II committee member as well

                        as the District II Girls’ Tennis Chairperson.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 6           Chairman Majikes presented a letter from Fred Barletta thanking the District II Committee for naming him the recipient of the annual McNichols media award. 

 

ITEM 7           Chairman Majikes announced the schedule of the spring sports’ steering committee workshops to be conducted at the PIAA State Offices:

ITEM 8           Chairman Majikes presented a letter from John C. Baranowski, Head Volleyball Coach at Lake-Lehman High School, and Michael Gokay, Principal of Lake-Lehman High School, thanking the committee for bringing to their attention a concern over the utilization of non-officials to referee volleyball matches during the April 8th and 9th Lake-Lehman Boy’s Volleyball Tournament.  The committee was assured that Lake-Lehman did not realize that this was a violation and that it will certainly be corrected in all future tournaments sponsored by the school.  A motion was made by Tony Rusnak, seconded by Bill King, to accept the report as submitted.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 9           Chairman Majikes reviewed with the committee approved revisions in Article VI (Transfers and Residence) and Article IX (Representation) which will become effective July 1, 2005.

 

ITEM 10         Chairman Majikes postponed discussion of the annual sportsmanship awards until the next meeting.  Hopefully, at that time, all disqualifications for the 2004-2005 year will be finalized and distributed.

 

ITEM 11         SPORTS REPORTS:

 

                        a.)  Baseball (Frank Majikes):  Chairman Majikes provided an update on the upcoming District II Baseball playoffs.

                        b.)  Softball (Bob Okrasinski):  Chairman Okrasinski provided an update on the upcoming District II Softball playoffs.

                        c.)  Track and Field (Jim Sabatini):  Chairman Sabatini presented a report on the current Track and Field championships.

                        d.)  Volleyball (Maureen Williams):  Chairman Williams provided an update on the upcoming Boys’ Volleyball playoffs.

                        e.)  Soccer (Ray Lowery):  In Chairman Lowery’s absence, Frank Majikes provided committee members with an updated set of brackets for the current Girls’ Spring championships.

 

ITEM 12         The committee reviewed recent correspondence from Northern Lebanon School District to the PIAA State Office regarding a request that the PIAA not permit member schools to play contests, or practice, on Sundays.  Northern Lebanon has requested that this proposal be placed on the agenda at the next meeting of the PIAA Board of Directors for its consideration.  After the discussion, a motion was made by Ross Scarantino, seconded by Frank Galicki, to direct the chairman to not support this proposal.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 13         Chairman Majikes reviewed a request from District I Swimming Chairperson, William Bartle.  The request asks that the PIAA adopt the same language regarding swim suit apparel as found in the National Federation rules.  The NFHS rule 3-3, article 1 states “It is recommended that all swimmers and divers on the team wear suits of identical coloring and pattern.”  PIAA rule 3-3, Article 1, states it is “mandatory” rather than “recommended”.  After discussion, a motion was made by Tom Finan, seconded by Tom Jenkins, to direct the chairman to support the request from District I.  All Ayes

 

ITEM 14         A motion was made by Tony Rusnak, seconded by Mike Costanza, to

                        approve the eligibility of Mia Sasaki, from Japan to Lakeland, in

                        accordance with Article VII, Foreign Exchange and International Students,

                        of the PIAA By-Laws.  All Ayes

 

 

ITEM 15         A motion was made by Maureen Williams, seconded by Dan Donovan, to adjourn the meeting.  All Ayes

 

Meeting was adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
